New on SI: NFL Players Who Contract Coronavirus at 'High-Risk' Events Subject to Discipline, Lack of Pay

Examples of high-risk events include indoor nightclubs, bars, sporting events, house parties and indoor religious services.

As part of the league's new rules surrounding COVID-19, NFL players who contract the coronavirus while attending "high-risk" events will be subject to team discipline and potentially not receive pay checks,

according to ESPN's Dan Graziano.

Graziano reports that a memo sent by the NFLPA to agents goes over several rules regarding player contracts, opt-out provisions and the ramifications of a canceled season. The final language of the agreement is still being worked out, but what has been agreed upon is that players will be held accountable for how they interact in public settings as the pandemic persists.

The memo obtained by ESPN outlines examples of what would be considered high-risk events, including indoor nightclubs or bars (other than picking up food to-go), indoor music concerts, professional sporting events and house parties, all with an upper limit of 15 people. Also included is attending indoor religious services that are attended by 25% of the venue's capacity.

Should a player contract the coronavirus as a result of engaging in these activities, his team could challenge the status of a COVID-19 diagnosis as a football injury, and therefore allow the team the option to not pay him. The memo says that this issue "remains open."

The following issues were also addressed in the memo:

  • If at least one week of the NFL season is played, players who are on a team's Week 1 roster or practice squad will receive a full year credited for the purpose of pension and free agency eligibility.
  • $17 million in player benefits were canceled, though they will be repaid through a new benefit after 2023.
  • Players who opt out because they are in a higher-risk medical category will receive a $350,000 stipend and a year toward free agency. Teams must offer separate housing to a player who has a high-risk person living with them.
  • If the 2020 season is canceled before teams make their final training camp cuts, players who are on training camp rosters and earned a 2019 season credit or was a draftee in 2020 will receive a $250,000 stipend and health insurance. Players who were not undrafted in 2020 or did not receive full credit in 2019 will get a $50,000 stipend.

NFLPA Accepts Changes to CBA, Training Camps To Start On Schedule

The countdown for the 2020 NFL season can officially begin. Yep, you heard me right.

After a meeting on Friday, the NFL and NFLPA have come to an agreement. NFLPA player reps voted 29-3 to accept the modified hard-fought CBA changes on both health and economic fronts. This means they will allow training camps to begin on Tuesday.

In a statement released by NFL Commissioner Rodger Goodell, said "The season will undoubtedly present new and additional challenges but we are committed to playing a safe and complete 2020 season culminating with the Super Bowl."

So mark your calendars football fans the NFL season opener between the Houston Texans and the Super Bowl Champions Kansas City Chiefs is set to take place on September 10th.

New on SI: Washington QB Alex Smith Cleared to Resume Full Football Activity

Smith hasn't played in the NFL since November 2018 after suffering a fractured tibia and fibula, injuries that were life-threatening after struggling with post-surgery infection.

Washington quarterback Alex Smith, who suffered a serious tibia and fibula fracture in

November 2018 and hasn't played since, was cleared for full football activity on Friday, per ESPN's Stephania Bell.

Smith is now going through COVID-19 testing and, if cleared, will report to the team's facility on Monday. He will then undergo a physical before the team determines what his next steps will be for him to participate in training camp.

Smith has been training in Hawaii for the past few months. He underwent X-rays and a CT scan when he returned to Washington before finally being told by his team of doctors that the results were very encouraging.

"Everyone was in agreement that my bone was in a really good place," Smith told ESPN. "I had healed a lot. They said that given the combination of the rod and where I was with the healing process, I had zero limitations and could even resume some football activities.

"To hear them say that from a life standpoint, they wouldn't restrict me from doing anything -- I could go skiing or snowboarding tomorrow if I wanted -- then on top of that, to get the green light that I could practice, get contact, that I had healed up, that much was pretty wild to hear. I didn't know if I would ever hear those words."

Smith's road to recovery was daunting. On top of the fractures, he dealt with infection following his surgeries, which resulted in some gruesome details and even talk of amputation.

Now, Smith is focused on continuing his comeback and preparing himself for the season, which is slated to begin on time after the NFLPA voted to accept amendments to the current collective bargaining agreement.

"For me, all eyes are on practice," Smith said. "That's the next step. I have to go prove to myself and certainly to everybody else that I can go practice."
